WeatherMidwest plains weather patterns are in full force. Hot, sunny days are generally windy. Cloudy, cooler days are less windy. Winds increase mid-morning reaching peak velocity around mid-afternoon. Waves usually are not a problem to sailboats as the wind direction is mostly across the lake and shelter from waves can be found along deep shorelines. Also the lake meanders along the old riverbed so a windward heading may change to a reach past the next bend. NOAA weather is available on VHF and Chamberlain radio (FM 94.5) also provides weather information. Late afternoon thunderstorms are common in May and June. Nighttime storms are possible in July but the severe weather often veers south of the lake and hits places like Yankton. The good news is the nights cool down and are pleasant for sleeping onboard. Bring a blanket as the lake is deep and the cool water makes the evenings especially chilly in May and June. |
